Selling products online? Get your labeling information right

As of 2015 products sold online should come with the exact same labeling information (production details, nutritional facts, ingredients) as their physical counterparts. When you’re managing multiple versions of the same product this can become a real challenge. Proper packaging and content management software has become even more essential to ensure the quality of your packaging while adhering to all regulations.

What does the new EU Regulation have in store?

The new EU Regulation 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers changes existing legislation on food labeling including:

  • mandatory nutrition information on processed foods
  • mandatory origin labeling of unprocessed meat from pigs, sheep, goats and poultry
  • highlighting allergens e.g. peanuts or milk, this regulation also covers non pre-packed foods including those sold in restaurants and cafés
  • better legibility i.e. minimum size of text

The same labeling information online and offline

Another area affected by the new regulations are online shops. Food sold online has to include the same labeling information as the physical items. When you’re selling a product in one country only, that’s not a big issue. When you’re selling multiple versions of the same product, however, this becomes problematic, both in terms of inventory management and online provisioning.
