The consumer’s love affair with glass packaging continues

Despite the growing popularity of PET bottles, consumers still have a strong preference for glass packaging when it comes to wine, craft spirits and beer.

A heart for glass

Consumers have always had a thing for glass packaging, and it doesn’t look like that’s about to change any time soon. More than 7 in 10 consumers find glass packaging to be the highest quality container available on the market, says a survey by Newton Market Research. The survey also found a whopping 82 percent of consumers to believe that glass is the healthiest packaging material for preserving beverages.

It’s a matter of taste

The Newton Market Research survey also found 91 percent of consumers who drink wine, spirits and beer consider glass the best packaging for preserving the taste of alcoholic beverages. Wine makers themselves agree as well that glass bottles are the best option for preserving the flavor of wine for several years.

Premium brands love glass packaging

As the consumer’s expectations for innovative packaging design continue to grow, their love affair with glass packaging is undoubtedly fed by premium brand owners’ own love for the material. Next to excellent barrier properties, glass packaging provides extensive design opportunities. It can be molded into virtually any shape imaginable, not to mention the various color options and the endless patterns and textures that can be embossed into the glass to give bottles a luxurious look and feel.
