How to design stunning shelf-ready packaging? 3 tips

Time is money. With retail personnel spending precious hours restocking or repositioning products, retailers are increasingly turning to brand owners for shelf-ready packaging, or retail ready packaging, in a bid to trim costs. Ranging from large cardboard boxes with tear-off parts to small paperboard POP displays, shelf-ready packaging has become an integral part of modern retail environments. Still, designing it is not without challenges. How to create stunning shelf-ready packaging without losing sight of its purpose? A few tips to keep in mind:

1.     Get informed

A great shelf-ready packaging design is both practical and visually appealing. Before heading to the drawing board, ask your client about:
  • shelf dimensions
  • transportation (mode of transport, distance, climate, …)
  • automated warehouse systems
  • the target audience

2.     Your target audience is always twofold

When designing shelf-ready packaging, you’re designing for consumers as well as the people who will be stocking the packaging. Retail staff should be able to know at a glance how to display the packaging on the shelves. A rule of thumb: if your shelf-ready packaging design requires more than three steps to be displayed correctly, it’s back to the drawing board.

3.     Stand out by thinking ahead

Shelf-ready packaging is not your average secondary packaging. Don’t hesitate to strive for an eye-catching design with bold (brand) colours and graphics that are sure to draw attention. Keep in mind, though, that your packaging should still look great and be easy to restock even when product supply is running low. Think ahead by testing your shelf-ready packaging design in a virtual store environment so you can adjust your design accordingly.
