Even the crème de la crème
of packaging designers cannot help but admit their defeat from time to time. The packaging industry, after all, is shaped by an endless series of trends
– each one more volatile than the last – not to mention ever-changing technology
and seasonal opportunities. Is your instinct telling you that your packaging design
is in dire need of a make-over
? These are the tell-tale signs to look out for.
1. The product it is a changin’
Out with the old, in with the new! A revamped product evidently calls for a packaging overhaul. Even if the product’s size and shape remain the same, the consumer will want to know that they’re buying a ‘new and improved
2. It’s written in the numbers
Sales are slowing down and focus groups are telling you the product is not to blame. So, perhaps there’s an issue with pricing, in-store presentation
, … or sales are dropping because your packaging design is not keeping up with the times. If the latter is the case, a little tweaking should suffice to regain the consumer’s interest. Think subtle colour changes
, a slightly different font, …
3. It’s the time of the season
It doesn’t matter whether you’re selling a seasonal product or not: seasonal opportunities
call for action. A simple yet festive bow, for example, can work wonders in terms of shelf appeal during the holiday season
4. The packaging design lacks in unity
Designing packaging for an entire line is tricky business. On the one hand, the consumer needs to be able to instantly recognize the individual products as part of a collection. On the other hand, nobody likes having to go through entire shelves in search of that one particular product
. If your packaging design is not in line with brand identity
or if individual products are too hard to tell apart, it’s high time to make some changes.
Tip: rethink your packaging design in 3D first
Not sure if your redesign packaging will take off? 3D packaging design software
enables you to check whether your target audience is on board without having to a short run first. What’s more, it makes it much easier to detect errors beforehand
and make the necessary corrections in a flash.
