Sand packaging: ephemeral, beautiful and ecological

What if we could use one of the few materials planet earth will never grow short of: sand? With sand as the prime resource material for packaging, ecological challenges would disappear overnight as sand is clean and 100 percent recyclable! What if we told you sand packaging already exists?

Sand packaging: an answer to the waste problem

The design comes from Alien and Monkey, a Spanish design workshop created by Daishu Ma, a writer and illustrator, and Marc Nicolau, an industrial designer.

“Sand made packaging re-establishes the ritual of discovering a gift
and the concept of sustainable packaging. As an answer to the increase of waste in modern society, we have developed a material using one of earth’s most abundant natural resources, sand, to create packaging for precious gifts”, the duo states.

“The gift is sealed inside this sand packaging, and by breaking the packaging its hidden content can be revealed. Destroying the packaging during its opening provides a unique sensory experience and creates a long-lasting memory for the person who discovers the gift.”

Will sand packaging ever be more than just a gimmick?

For now Alien and Monkey’s sand packaging seems little more than a gimmick. Yet think about the possibilities if the technique could be developed so the industry could make more use of sand as a resource! Because sand is a locally available resource nearly everywhere on our planet, it can be made where it’s needed, eliminating the need for shipping. It really would be the perfect, clean packaging solution!
